Projectile Motion, Introduction to Projectile Motion


MOTION OF A PROJECTILE

When a particle is thrown into space in any position at an angle with respect to horizontal or vertical direction. Its subsequent motion is subjected to only gravitational forces.

A Projectile travels both in horizontal and vertical directions and traces curvilinear path which is parabolic. The necessary conditions for a body to be called a projectile are:

1) It should be given some initial velocity.
2) It should move under the action of gravity alone, there should not be any other driving force.

IMPORTANT TERMS:

Angle of Projection:  Angle at which particle is thrown with respect to horizontal.
Horizontal Range: The horizontal distance covered by particle during its motion.
Time of Flight: The time interval of particle when it remains in motion.
Height of Projectile: The maximum height reached by projectile from reference line is called Height of Projectile.

There exists certain situation where a body is having both motions of translation and rotation simultaneously at a particular instant. Examples of such a combined motions are:
• Motion of roller without slipping.
• Motion of a wheel of locomotive train, truck, car etc.
• A rod sliding against a wall at one end and floor at other end.

RELATIVE VELOCITY

Consider two trains A and B moving in parallel tracks and in the same direction with velocities 60 km/hr and 45 km/hr respectively. These are absolute velocities with respect to a fixed frame of reference. To a passenger sitting in train B, the train A will appear to be moving with a speed of (60-45) = 15 km/hr.

DIFFRACTION OF X-RAY - LAUE SPOT - LAUE METHOD

The wavelength of X-Ray is in the order of 1 Angstrom ordinary grating which have 6000 line per inch cm cannot produce diffraction pattern of X-Ray. There in the case of X-Ray instead of ordinary grating, Crystal Grating are used. Hence a crystal grating is a three dimensional space grating when a narrow beam of X-Ray is allowed to pass through a crystal. The X-Rays are diffracted in different direction and form a symmetrical pattern of spot on a Photographic plate.
